CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATOR
The individual selected for the position of Crime Scene Investigator may remain in the position for a period of
not more than ten (10) years.
The position of Crime Scene Investigator will be responsible for a variety of duties, which will include, but not be
limited to the following:
1. Attend and remain proficient in training specific to this assignment.
2. The collection and preservation of evidence related to criminal activity.
3. The preservation of crime scenes through photography, videotaping, and/or detailed drawing.
4. The development, lifting, and preservation of latent fingerprints.
5. Attending postmortems for evidence purposes.
6. Ability to perform essential functions of a PO I position as determined by job analysis (copy
available in the City of Lansing Human Resources Office).
7. Perform the duties of a Police Officer I assigned to Patrol as necessary.
8. Perform other duties as assigned by Investigations Division Captain or his/her designee.
The following criteria will be considered in the selection of the officer for the position of Crime Scene
Investigator:
1. The expression of interest and qualifications for the position.
2. Seniority insofar as reasonable.
3. Willingness to be called back to work during off-duty hours.
4. Willingness to work a flexible work schedule as required based on operational need.
5. Basic knowledge of Digital photography and cameras preferred.
6. Basic skill in the development and lifting of latent fingerprints preferred.
7. Basic computer software operation knowledge preferred.
8. The demonstration via previous work history to work independently with a minimum of direct
supervision.
9. The demonstration via previous work history of his/her dependability.
