As per the previously completed review of the construction documents by the Building Safety Division, the following items have been upgraded as per their recommendations: The building construction type for the proposed lounge/locker room addition has been changed from type 5-N to 2-N construction and there will be 2-hour separation walls between the proposed addition and the existing manufacturing area. In addition to the items previously mentioned, it has been recommended to Atmosphere Annealing that a sprinkler system be installed within the proposed addition as well as the existing manufacturing facility. The existing facility which is currently of type 2-N construction has several large oil filled vats. In addition, a separation wall will be located within the manufacturing space that will reduce the manufacturing area adjacent to the proposed and existing office area to only 8000 sq. ft. With regards to the truck dock and storage area proposed for the rear of the building. The proposed structure will be located no less than five feet from the property line. In addition, the wall adjacent to the property line will be fire rated for a 2-hour rated assembly and a 2-hour separation wall will be located between the proposed truck dock addition and the existing manufacturing facility. Any openings within the separation walls shall be with an approved fire shutter or fire rated door assembly. Atmosphere Annealing has full intentions of complying with all of the previously mentioned recommendations with the exception of the installation of a fire sprinkler system through-out the existing and proposed facility. Within the existing manufacturing facility are located two vats of 1500 and 900 gallon capacity. Each vat is filled with extremely hot oil. If water was to come into contact with these oil filled vats an explosive reaction could occur. In addition, there is currently no sprinkler system within the building nor was the building designed with the idea of having a sprinkler system installed. The installation of such a system through-out the building would be of an extreme cost that could lead to the elimination of this project and to the eventual shut-down of this facility and its relocation to another area. In addition, these proposed changes will be the final phase of expansion for this facility. We sincerely ask the board to consider these items and ask for its leniency regarding this matter. Section 709, Uniform Mechanical Code requires no less than 30" x 30" . -The floor opening is 21 " x 26" , the owner of the house has lived with this existing basement opening for approximentaly 43 years . When replacing both a full size 40 gallon water heater and the furnace, we had no problem removing the old equipment through the existing opening or with installation of the new equipment . Therefor, we see no reason to in- crease the size of this opening and cause damage to the carpet and floor. 2. The working space in front of the furnace is '13 3/4" . Section 505, Uniform Mechanical Code requires no less than 30" . -The furnace has a small 7 2" high retaining wall 13 2" from the front of the furnace to keep dirt from falling down into the furnace area. There is a main support pole approximately 36" in front of the furnace . If this area were to be dug out, it would cause the footing to become loose and unstable. The furnace requires 12" clearance to remove the blower assembly. The manufacturer's requirement is 6" of clearance from combustables . Therefor, the furnace is completely serviceable and no logical reason exist to remove the retain- ing wall thus allowing dirt to fall into the furnace area. 3 . Vent connector material is single wall pipe for approx- imately 5' . Section 915(a) , Uniform Mechanical Code does not allow for single wall pipe to pass through a crawl space . 4. Vent connector at connection to the chimney liner does not have 4" per foot rise as required by Section 915 (D) , Uniform Mechanical Code . -With 3 and 4 being addressed together, Adams ADAMS MECHANICAL Heating & Air Conditioning Sales & Service 4601 S. The crawl space has not been provided with combustion air as required by Chapter 6, Uniform Mechanical Code and manufacturer's instructions. -Before bidding this job, both myself and Chief Mechanical Inspector Ralph Goff visited this home to inspect the existing system. The issue of com- bustion air was discussed between Mr. Goff and myself and we both agreed that this would not be necessary because we were conditioning this base- ment with supply runs : It is also stated in the manufacturer's installation instructions that that when using indoor air for combustion, you must have 1 square inch of free air per 1 ,000 BTU. We have installed 3 supply heat runs to this base- ment area with the total square inches totaling 160 square inches . This amount is more than adequate for combustion. 6. Ducts have not been -insulated as required by Section 1005 and Table 10-D, Uniform Mechanical Code. Also, check manufacturer's instrucion for clearance of insul- ation to earth below ducts . -Adams Mechanical will remove all dirt from under duct system to required minimum of 4" as per code . Section 1005 and Table 10-D of the Uniform Mechan- ical Code requires 0" insulation for a conditioned space. This basement is a conditioned space con- sidering that there are 3 heat run to the area. With this fact, there is no logical reason that this duct system should require insulation. 7 . Manufacturer's installation instructions requires that the manifold pressure be adjusted (see page 15) , the tem- perature rise be set ( see page 11 ) , and the heat antic- ipator setting must be adjusted (see page 12) . -All this requirement was performed and time of start-up.
