Meeting of October 12, 2005
Minutes
?i"
Attending: William Hubbell, Chair; Bonnie Bennett, Maria Enriquez, Howard Jones, Michael
McFadden.
Guests: Sam Eyde, John Foss, Murdock Jemerson
1. The Meeting was called to order by Chairperson Hubbell at 5:35 P.M.
2. The minutes were approved as presented (with a correction for the name Ammahad
Shekarakki). Motion by Jones; second by Bennett.
3. Quinto Sol Mural
The City Council approved a special land use permit for the Christian Life Church to
locate at the old Ramon's restaurant ("The Alamo" building). After discussion, it was
recommended that the Board request that the Church (through its attorney) keep the Quinto Sol
mural available for public display rather than cover it permanently.
It was suggested that the Board write a letter to the Church, if necessary, inviting them to
meet with the Board to discuss this issue.
4. Application to name the Ranney Park Handball Court in honor of Norm Young
John Foss presented the application of Robert McCormick and others to honor Norm
Young by naming the handball court at Ranney Park in his honor.
Young was a graduate of Sexton High School and a lifelong resident of Lansing. He was
a champion wrestler and a national champion handball player, winning the national title 19 times.
He is a member of the Lansing Sports Hall of Fame.
The application proposes that a plaque be placed on a pedestal next to the court.
Murdock discussed some of the issues regarding the placement of the plaque so the Board asked
that he work with the applicant to find a suitable placement.
The plaque and pedestal would cost approximately $500. The group would be
responsible for funding it.
Jones moved, McFadden seconded sending the recommendation to Council.
Murdock invited Mr. Foss and Mr. Eyde to attend the Park Board meeting later this night
to present to them and gain their approval.
5. Lansing City Museum
Wiener reported on his conversation with Linda Peckham, Lansing Historical Society,
about locating a City Museum at the Carnegie Library on the LCC campus. LCC has decided to
use that building as a university center where other colleges and universities who provide
programs to LCC students will set up offices. There is still the question of whether there is room
for a museum in the building. Linda will talk about this with President Cunningham.
6. Memorial for Cesar Chavez
Maria will report on any current discussions by the Cesar Chavez Commission on their
ideas for a memorial.
7. The Board suggested that we invite Ammahad Shakerakki to the next meeting to discuss his
proposal to memorialize Malcolm X. It was suggested that we also invite Dr. Eugene Cain,
Director of the El Shabazz Academy (named in honor of Malcolm X) to that meeting.
8. The meeting was adjourned at 6:30. Motion by Enriquez; second by Bennett.
