HomeMy WebLinkAbout4.1.25 DEI Advisory MinutesDiversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Board Meeting - Minutes April 1, 2025 5:30 – 6:30pm 7th Floor, City Hall Lansing, MI Call to Order: 5:31 pm by Chairperson Sorroche Attendance: Byron Haskins, Emily Sorroche, Florensio Hernandez, Terry Frazier, Cheryl Horn- Bernard, Absent: Sharron Gillison; quorum was achieved. City Staff Attendees: Kim Coleman, Michael Hopson, Daniel Duchene Approval of Agenda: a.Motion by Byron Haskins, supported by Terry Frazier. Approval of March 4th Minutes: a. Motion by Byron Haskins, supported by Cheryl Horn-Bernard. Public Comments: Mia Luidzenberg, a MSU journalism student in a media science reporting class is observing the meeting. Director’s & Culture & Accountability Officer’s Update: 1. Mr. Hopson reminded the Board of the Lansing Path Forward: Homelessness Study Outcomes and Community Feedback Forum on April 8th at 5:30 PM. 2. 13 Racial Equity Grants have been recommended for funding. Once approved by City Council a press release will be sent out to recognize recipients. 3. There is space available for Board members to attend the Cesar Chavez luncheon on April 9th at 11:30 AM with an RSVP. 4. Jonathan Butler, who was instrumental in the original social justice consultation with the city will be visiting with city staff during the week of April 20th. 5.Staff will be looking for assistance from Board members in the Celebration of Diversity event on the evening of June 5th. More information is coming soon. Standing Themes Updates: No updates were provided at this time. Board reassigned Themes/ committees. •Justice and Safety – (Terry) Board member Frazier is looking for input from Board members on issues, one area is education and resources for school system parents. •Economic Empowerment – (Florensio, Sharon, & Emily) Board members Sorroche and Hernandez led discussion of how the city might integrate last month’s presenter (Dr. Bishop) website resources with current city-supported resources in developing a small business toolkit. 2 •Community Sustainability – (Byron) Byron reminded the Board of the Lansing Path Forward: Homelessness Study Outcomes and Community Feedback Forum on April 8th at 5:30 PM. Unfinished Business: a. There are no new ordinances ready for review. New Business: a. Mr. Hopson provided the updated version of the Human Rights Ordinance Brochure. b. Mr. Hopson suggested we have a special meeting to enable the Board to meet and discuss issues with Jonathan Butler. •Motion made by Byron Haskins to cancel the May 6th meeting and schedule our next meeting on April 22nd to coincide with Mr. Butler’s visit.
