Dear City of Lansing Memorial Board Members and Council Members:
I am writing on behalf of the Lansing for Cesar E. Chavez Committee to urge you to
rename portions of East Grand River Avenue and West Grand River Avenue, Lansing,
Michigan between Oakland Avenue and Pine Street to Cesar E. Chavez Avenue. I
understand that the City of Lansing Ordinances allow for the renaming of streets.
I wholeheartedly support the efforts of the Committee to rename portions of East and
West Grand River Avenue completely, eliminating the 2010 honorary designation, and
elevating its status to a city street named Cesar E. Chavez Avenue.
Although the community efforts to rename a street Cesar E. Chavez Avenue commenced
in the 1990's, now is the time for the City of Lansing to take this final step in 2017, 1 hope

I applaud Lansing Memorial Board members for considering to name a street after Cesar E.
Chavez: A man who worked endlessly to give a voice to thousands of farm workers. In doing so
he brought light to those in Lansing and In Michigan who are underpaid, have no
representation and work for billionaire companies that keep workers living a substandard way
of life.
The discussions that follow your decisions will surely point out the economics of such a change,
but 1 sincerely hope that the benefits to Lansing residents will also be discussed and be seen as
much more important.
Cesar E. Chavez is a much needed, honored and recognized American hero. In a culture where
violence is often used to settle differences, let Lansing citizens discuss how this man
encouraged non-violence among his followers and how humility, perseverance, and strong
negotiating skills accomplished his union's goals and bettered the lives of thousands.
What strong goals for our families! What strong message for our youth
Lansing youth and adults need a hero who promoted non-violence.
A strategy that worked and was applauded by many world nations and leaders.
Name a street after Cesar E. Chavez! Do not marginalize our community by not doing so.
Respectfully,
Tony Benavides,

Dear Lansing City Memorial Review Board and City Council Members,
I am writing on behalf of the Lansing for Cesar E.Chavez Committee to urge you to rename East Grand River
Avenue,Lansing,Michigan, between Oakland Avenue and Pine Street to Cesar E. Chavez Avenue. I understand
that the City of Lansing ordinances allow for the renaming of streets.
As the grandson of the first Hispanic Ingham County Commissioner who once represented this part of
Lansing/Ingham County on the Ingham County Board of Commissioners, and now the current Ingham County
Commissioner representing this area, I witnessed the impact Cesar E. Chavez had on the Hispanic community.
From his visits and marches which mobilized Hispanics throughout the Greater Lansing area,an honor of
naming this street after Cesar E. Chavez is most fitting. Many Hispanic families settled their families in the
North Lansing area, often referred to as"El Norte",after they were tired of migrating to Lansing when they
worked as migrant farmworkers in fields around the area. Just as the former Logan Street was named after Civil
Rights Leader Martin Luther King Jr., and Main Street named after Malcolm X,now is the time to honor Cesar
E. Chavez with a permanent name on a street in the City of Lansing.
1 wholeheartedly support the efforts of the Lansing for Cesar E. Chavez Committee to rename East Grand River
Avenue to Cesar E.Chavez Avenue.I understand that this involves dropping the name East Grand River Avenue
completely, eliminating the 2012 Honorary designation, and elevating its status to a city street named Cesar E.

RE: Lansing for Cesar E. Chdvez Committee's application to rename E. Grand
River Avenue and W. Grand River Ave to Cesar E. Chdvez Avenue
Dear City Council and Lansing Memorial Board:
We fully support renaming East Grand River Avenue and West Grand River Avenue,
Lansing,Michigan to Cesar E. Chavez Avenue. Lupe's parents (Efraim and Francisca
Marinez) were migrant farmworkers and came to the Lansing area in the 1940's. Lupe, her
parents and siblings personally met and worked alongside Cesar E.Chavez when he came
to Lansing. Lupe personally experienced life in Lansing, as a daughter of farmworkers.
Honoring this great man and labor leader speaks volumes about Lansing's mission to be a
world-class city and model for inclusivity, diversity, and recognition of national leaders.
Cesar E. Chavez, like Martin Luther King,Jr.,Mahatma Ghandi and Mother Theresa
dedicated his life to the nonviolent struggle for social justice and equality for all. He
organized the Farm Workers union and fought for their dignity and humane living
conditions. He received numerous awards including the U.S. Presidential Medal of
Freedom, (America's highest civilian honor),and the Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Prize.
In the 1970's, Cesar E. Chavez marched from Saginaw,Michigan to Lansing, Michigan in
support of farmworkers and their fight against inhumane living conditions in Michigan.
Lupe's family and hundreds of others walked alongside Cesar E. Chavez in that march.
Legislators heard the message and introduced legislation to improve living conditions for
migrant farmworkers.
Sadly, initial efforts to honor Cesar E. Chavez in 1994 with the renaming of Grand Avenue
to Cesar E. Chavez Ave were undermined in 1995. Selecting East Grand River Avenue and
West Grand River Avenue is most appropriate as it was the center of activities and
organizations for the Latino and Hispanic communities such as El Renacimiento, a bilingual
community newspaper, taquerias, restaurants (Ramon's,Torres's),Cristo Rey Church,
Cristo Rey Community Center, and Quinto Sol (radio and newspaper) to name a few.
For all of the above reasons,we urge you to approve the Lansing for Cesar E. Chavez
Committee's application to rename East Grand River Avenue and West Grand River Avenue
to Cesar E. Chavez Avenue. Notably,Lansing has chosen to honor Martin Luther King,Jr.,
we hope that you will now choose to honor Cesar E. Chavez also with this street name
change.

To: Lansing for Cesar E. Chavez Committee
It is with great pleasure that I put fourth my support for the renaming of portions of East Grand
River Avenue and West Grand River Avenue in Lansing Michigan to Cesar E. Chavez Avenue.
As am member of the Lansing community for over 44 years I have witnessed Lansing grow and
evolve into a great city. Lansing is diverse, accepting and ever changing. This street name
change would enhance and add to the great city that Lansing is. This petition to rename a street
in honor of the late labor leader Cesar E. Chavez is a long time in coming. It began in 1993,
when the request was to rename Grand Ave.to Cesar E. Chavez Avenue. That was granted, but
later in 1995,was unfortunately overturned and rename back to Grand Ave.
Lansing is the ONLY city in the nation to take away a street name for Cesar E. Chavez and
rename it back to its original designation. This is a disgrace to the Lansing community, the
Latino/Chicano community and puts a black eye on the city. Let us not make the same mistake
again. Let us embrace our diversity, pay tribute to those who helped transform the city and be
welcoming to positive change. The Lansing for Cesar E. Chavez Committee is asking not for a
radical change, only to honor a great man who fought for his country in WWII,a man who was
awarded the Congressional Medal of Freedom(the highest civilian honor that can be given), a
man who fought for the basic civil rights of those working in the fields, and a man who promoted
social justice through non-violence.
It is my belief that by renaming East Grand River Avenue and West Grand River Avenue in
Lansing Michigan to Cesar E. Chavez Avenue will promote better relations between the
Latino/Chicano community and both the Lansing community and specifically the Old Town
Business community. Let us be the change we all want, let us stand together to honor a great
man and let us work together to make Lansing a better place to live and work.

RE: Support for Renaming E. Grand River Ave., Lansing,MI to C6sar E.
Chavez Avenue
• Dear Lansing City Council Members,
Greater Lansing Area Labor Council for Latin American Advancement
(LCLAA) Chapter,we are writing to you on behalf of the Lansing for C6sar E.
Chavez Committee to encourage you to rename East Grand River Avenue,
• a Lansing, MI.,between Oakland Avenue and Pine Street to Cesar E. Chavez
Avenue, We understand that the City of Lansing Ordinances allow for the
renaming of streets.
Cesar E. Chavez visited Lansing, capital of a key agricultural state, several
times. He was scheduled to visit again in 1993 but died in April of that year. He
visited north Lansing, where many migrant workers worked, going back into
the 1940's and the growing of Latino community in our State Capital City
prosper in the 1960's and 1970's. Latino businesses come and go,but there is a
history there that citizens of Lansing shouldn't forget. C6sar E. Chavez
• embraced our community. He was a union and civil rights leader, a.community
activist, and most importantly a non-violent crusader. C6sar E. Chavez legacy
manes us resolve for positive change and social justice.
We support the efforts of the Lansing for C6sar E. Chavez Committee to
• rename East Grand River Avenue to Cesar E. Chavez Avenue, This will
== ' involve in eliminating the 2012 honorary designation.
-. .s
Lansing is the capitol city of Michigan, in which we are a very diverse city,
' urge you to consider renaming a street Cesar E. Chavez Avenue. Please act as
• • soon as possible.
