Call to Order – 5:31 p.m. 1.1. Present: Barbara Lawrence, Steven Purchase, Charles Willis, Kris Singh, Kathleen Tobe, Gina Nelson 1.2. Absent: Rodney Singleton, Jarrod LaRue 2. Additions to Agenda 2.1. Lexipol Policies moved to Old Business 3. Approval of Minutes: Approved as written 4. Public Comment – Agenda Items (Time Limit: 3 Minutes): None 5. Review Communications 5.1. Letter from community member thanks LFD for their service and withing them a Happy Easter. Letter included in meeting packet. 6. Comments from Chair 6.1. Chair Purchase reflects on his time with the board and how the role of the Fire Board has evolved and changed on his time on the board. He is proud to work with LFD this far and is proud to be from Lansing and know that the fire department here is an asset to the city. He encourages the next chair to plan out the next meeting and see what could benefit the board and/or the community and hopes the body continues forward to be proactive and productive members to support the LFD. 7. Presentations - none 8. Fire Administration Report – Chief Sturdivant 8.1. Early April was busy for LFD with several fires. The crew showed some great teamwork and morale is up. 8.2. The budget presentation to the Council went well. It was very user friendly and Chief was able to easily answer questions. The council was tentatively interested and approving of the two new FTE. 8.3. Chief has been in talks with the Inion regarding the new positions and the four MOU’s that have been signed (acting captain, acting battalion chief, comp time for overtime worked, and increased incentive for ambulance rides). 8.4. 41 individuals succeeded the physical ability test for the next round of hiring. We are looking to hire 17. Shiawassee, Lansing MI 48933 14 individuals will be graduating tom LCC in June. 8.5. We have rolled out several community resource and safety programs focused on 3-5th graders and the aging population. We are looking to increase our smoke detector program and will purchase about 25 AED’s to be placed in the community. 8.6. LFD is applying for several grants including a Fire and Life Safety Grant and a Firehouse Sub Grant. The Firehouse grant would be used to add another level of safety for the crews by providing handheld thermal imagers. We are also applying for a SAFER grant for 15 new positions to augment staffing. 8.7. We have taken delivery of two new rescue boats and four new motors. We have also gotten new hose and new nozzles. 8.8. LFD is awaiting a decision from the Office of City Attorney on how involved LFD should be in Plan Review/Code Compliance. There is some revenue attached to the reviews, but LFD is more concerned that LFD takes on greater risk if there are issues with code. 9. Old Business 9.1. Lexipol Policies passed unanimously. 10. New Business - none 11. Request for Commissioners to be excused. 11.1. Correspondence from Jerrod LaRue asking to be excused has been received – excused unanimously. 11.2. No motion to excuse Rodney Singlton. 12. Commissioner Comments 12.1. Commissioner Willis stated that he was not aware that LFD did not have representation on Plan and Review and supports that the Fire Marshal Division should be a more active part of the process. Commissioner Singh shares that there was a time that Building Safety had “given” Code Compliance to LFD but is unsure at what point LFD was removed from the formal process. 12.2. Chair Purchase asks after an update on the radio system and if they are upgrading to 5G. Chief shares that there have been some concerns, especially in older building. It is an ongoing project. 12.3. Commissioner Nelson shares that she was invited to join the Awards Committee by Chief Odom and they will keep the board updated as the meeting progress. 13. Public Comment - None 14.
