Present: Commissioners Adams Simon, Anderson, Bauer, Boyd, Dowd, Jeffries, Qawwee, Washington
Absent: Lopez (excused)
Staff Present: City Clerk Swope, Deputy Clerk Drever
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Chair Jeffries at 11:01 AM.
Roll Call
Clerk Swope called the roll of the Commission. A quorum was present.
Overview of the Lansing City Charter
Chair Jeffries gave a summary of the Commission’s work so far.
Vice Chair Adams Simon introduced Donna Mullins from the League of Women Voters.
Donna Mullins gave a presentation about the City Charter.
Public Comment
Charmie Gholson spoke about policing, neighborhood relations, and facilitating nonviolent communication.
Tom Durbin spoke about implementing a 3/5 vote for Council to override a mayoral veto.
Linda Appling spoke about the Board of Water and Light not listening to the residents and creating oversight of
the Board for residents and City Council.
Barbie Gurley-Cox spoke about communication between police officers and code enforcement.
Kathryn Young spoke about the importance of the Commission’s work and July Fourth fireworks regulations.
Amir spoke about moving local elections to even years.
Commissioner Remarks
The commissioners introduced themselves.
Commissioner Washington spoke about addressing complaints against the police.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned by chair Jeffries at 12:09 PM.
