Plot 4: Charles Stevens born 1846; died 1919; buried 7/9/19
Mary Eleanor Woodward, Metta Olds' mother, died at 21 from typhoid fever. Metta was just 3 months old.She was
raised by Mary Eleanor's sisters: Sarah (known as Aunt Sate), who married Charles Stevens and Anna Amelia (Aunt Anna)
who married Ort Laycox.
Metta went through the ninth grade after which she worked in a store before marrying R.E. Olds on June 5, 1889 in
Lansing.
1880 Census:
Charles (aged 33) was listed as a laborer
Sarah (age 35) was listed as"keeping house"; Sarah was also married during this year.
Eliza Abel Bennett Rorbacker(aged 59) was listed as mother-in-law
1910 Census:
Baker Street, Lansing, Michigan
Charles (age 63) was listed as having"own income"
Sarah (age 65)was listed as having "none" for income
Note:the George Abels(see below)plus Anna Laycox were next door neighbors.George was an"auto tester"
1920 Census:
Horton Avenue, Lansing, Michigan
Sarah (age 75)was listed as head of the family with her occupation shown as "none"
Anna Laycox(Sarah's sister, age 72) had her occupation shown as "none"
-Anna had 1 child, Greta, who married George Abel; they had one son: Ransom Orson Abel
Clement E.Abel (age 42) was listed as a cousin; his occupation was oil press operator in an auto factory
Jessie M. Abel (age 27)was also listed as a cousin; her occupation was listed as "none"
The Olds' gave the extra plots to the Stevens' in recognition for Sarah's raising of Metta and their close relationship.
Notes from Gladys Olds Anderson:
Sarah: school teacher, shy, died at 79 of apoplexy
Anna: school teacher, somewhat neurotic, died at 78 of hardening of the arteries
