SHIAWASSEE ST., LANSING MI 48933 (517) 483-4200 |LANSINGMI.GOV/FIRE Brian Sturdivant, Fire Chief 1.Call to Order – 5:33 p.m. 1.1.Present: Barbara Lawrence (arrived 5:37), Steven Purchase, Charles Willis, Rodney Singleton, Jarrod LaRue, Kris Singh 1.2.Absent: Gina Nelson, Kathleen Tobe 2.Additions to Agenda: None 3.Approval of Minutes: Approved as written 4.Public Comment – Agenda Items (Time Limit: 3 Minutes): None 5.Review Communications – none 6.Comments from Chair 6.1.The chair thanks the Board for their time and effort this last year. He also wished the individuals of the department a happy holiday season and a happy new year. 6.2.The Charter Commission elections are in the spring and the chair encourages the Board to consider the impact that someone on that commission will have. 7.Presentations – none 8.Fire Administration Report – Chief Sturdivant 8.1.Chief speaks on the number of working incidents and community fatalities. He shares how LFD is working to bring fire prevention tips to the pockets of the community that are not taking advantage of the programs that LFD has. Chief is focused on making Lansing a safer community in the new year. 8.2.Chief is working with dispatch and other community resources to have communications in multiple languages available, especially on the phone. 8.3.Chief has a positive year end meeting with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor going over the last calendar years progress and upcoming initiatives in the new year including the Cadet Program. He spoke with them regarding staffing. Shiawassee, Lansing MI 48933 program, cancer screenings, and four new positions a year for the next four years. They were receptive but they made no promises. 8.4.One individual was released from the recruit academy. New recruitment is open until end of February to fill vacancies from a round of retirements in April. There will be 10-12 open positions. 8.5.Assistant Chief interviews were conducted, and an offer will be made by early 2024 with an anticipated start date of end of January. 8.6.Clerical testing for the training and logistics administrative positions is underway and interviews for that will be happening soon. 8.7.The promotional process has been wrapped up and Chief is working on an MOU to plan for the next promotional process in 2025. 8.8.They are also working on an MOU for alternative compensation for staffing as there will be blocks of time for 4-8 hours instead of only 24 hour shifts. They are working with HR and union for comp time instead of OT only. 9.Old Business 9.1.None. 10.New Business 10.1.Lexipol Policies: 209-212 10.2. Some discussion on Lexipol Policies followed by a vote to approve as written. Passed unanimously. 10.3. Annual Report 10.4. Some discussion; unanimously passed as written with grammatical changes. 10.5. 2024 Meeting Schedule 10.6. Approved as written. See packet. 11.Request for Commissioners to be excused 11.1.Gina Nelson and Kathleen Tobe: excused unanimously 12.Commissioner Comments 12.1.Commissioner Singleton commends Chief Sturdivant on his work this year, and shares that he is impressed by the work that he’s done and that he is excited to see where the department is heading. 12.2.Vice Chair Lawrence inquires about the Firefighter of the Year.
