The Newark Street Walkover over Pleasant Grove Road is an
aluminum truss constructed in 1974. The walkover is in generally
good condition.
SUPERSTRUCTURE
On the west stair, the bottom tread has damage at both ends and the north stringer top flange is bent at
the bottom tread. There is a dent/scrape on the intermediate platform of the west stair. The fencing is
loose and pulled away at the top of the stairs on the south side. Small sections of fencing are missing at
the gaps between the stairs and the main span. Many of the wire ties at the bottom of the pedestrian
fencing are broken or missing (50 total counted)
At the north side of the main span, the handrail is missing the bolt at the fourth support from the west.
It is bent at the fifth support from the west. It is also broken at the fourth support from the east and held
up with a piece of wire.
FOUNDATIONS
At the west side of the bridge, both the stair and main span concrete foundation pedestals have leaching
cracks. There is some deterioration of the grout under the column base plates.
The east stair concrete foundation pedestal has heavy leaching map cracking. There is heavy scaling and
spalling, mainly on the southeast and southwest sides as well as on top at the south, east and west sides.
The east main span concrete foundation pedestal has leaching cracks. There is some disintegration of
the grout under both column base plates. At the south column, it appears that the grout was just packed
around the edges and does not fill completely under the base plate.
The support slab at the bottom of the west stairs is heavily cracked and broken. Pieces are lifted up from
frost heave and can be easily pulled up. The sidewalk slab at the bottom of the east stairs is heavily
broken around the edges with scaling/spalling on the top surface.
The guardrail in front of the west truss foundation has a small dent. The guardrail in front of the east
stairs and foundations is dented from traffic impacts.
