The structure is a three span steel bridge constructed in 1972 and
rehabilitated in 2009. The bridge is in overall good condition.
DECK
The concrete deck has very tight map cracking throughout and minor diagonal cracks in the southwest
and northeast quadrants at the abutments. There are some hairline diagonal cracks. The deck was
constructed with galvanized steel stay‐in‐place formwork and the deck bottom cannot be observed for
inspection. The expansion joints are partially filled with grit.
There are sidewalks on both sides of the bridge and are in good condition. The railings are four‐tube
galvanized steel on concrete brush blocks and are in good condition.
SUPERSTRUCTURE
The beams are A588 steel with pin and hangers and are in overall good condition. The beams are
unpainted except at the pin and hangers. The pin and hangers were replaced and the beam ends zone
painted as part of the 2009 rehabilitation and are in generally good condition. The unpainted portions of
the beams have a tight, uniform layer of corrosion throughout and are generally performing as intended.
There are white stains on the beams at a regular spacing that appear to have been from sawcutting and
removing the original deck.
The diaphragms along the center of the bridge have somewhat heavier corrosion and minor
delamination. These appear to correspond to the location of the median and open longitudinal joint of
the original deck. There is moderate to heavy corrosion with some delamination at the fixed bearings at
the south abutment.
SUBSTRUCTURES
Both abutments have a minor vertical crack in the middle. The south abutment has a hairline crack
under the 5th bay from the west. The south pier has small spalls at the top of the construction joint on
both faces. The north pier has a vertical hairline crack. There are also several logs caught on the
upstream end north pier.
APPROACHES
The bridge approaches are concrete with concrete curb & gutter and are in overall good condition. The
approach guardrail meets current MDOT standards. There is some denting of the guardrail beyond the
bridge.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Clean out expansion joints.
Remove logs from north pier.
