The Averill Road Walkover over West Holmes Road is a painted steel
truss. The walkover was constructed in 1967 and partially painted in
2003. The walkover is in generally fair condition.
SUPERSTRUCTURE
At the south stair, there is corrosion and section loss which was painted over at the northeast inside
corner of the intermediate platform framing. There are newer bolts at the connection of the bottom
stairs to the intermediate platform and of the upper stairs to the main span. There is a broken
grounding wire at the south stair support.
The south main span support consists of two vertical columns on the north side and two diagonal
members on the south side and oriented north-south. The east diagonal brace is rusted through at the
bottom on the south, east and west sides. The east vertical column has a rust hole on the bottom at the
west side, which appears to originally been a drain hole that got larger.
On the north stair, the 3rd tread from the bottom is dented. The welding of the north upper stair to the
intermediate platform is incomplete. At the top platform, there is a broken deck plank at the southwest
corner. There is corrosion and some minor section loss at a welded joint in the north hand railing at the
intermediate platform. The grounding wire at the north stairs is broken.
The north main span support consists of four vertical columns. There are also two diagonal braces
oriented north-south. The two southern columns support the main truss while the two northern
columns support the upper stair platform. The bottom of the east diagonal brace has rust holes on the
east, west and south sides where it connects to the southeast vertical column.
At the main span truss, the second bottom diagonal cross-brace from the south is rusted through on the
northeast side towards the north end. There is scattered rust on the deck planking and at the top chord
connection plates.
Some of the wire ties at the bottom of the pedestrian fencing are missing at the stairs (2 total counted).
FOUNDATIONS
The stair stringers are supported by concrete curbs. At the south stair, the curb is cracked at the north
stringer and broken completely off adjacent to the south stringer. There is also a crack in the middle
towards the south stringer. There is spalling of the sidewalk slab at the base of the south stairs. At the
north stair, the curb has some honeycombing and spalls at the south end.
At the south main span concrete foundation pedestals, the north pedestal has a spall on the northwest
corner behind the guardrail.
At the north main span concrete foundation pedestals, the south pedestal has cracking and small spalls
on the top at the southeast and southwest corners.

guardrail is rusty and does not have a bullnose ending at either end.
