The structure is a single span steel bridge constructed in 1978. The
bridge had maintenance work in 2017 consisting of deck patching,
epoxy overlay, and east sidewalk patching. The bridge is in overall
good condition.
DECK
The deck surface and new epoxy overlay is in good condition. The deck underside has cracks with
efflorescence in the northwest and southeast corners. There are rusty vertical cracks on the deck fascias
at approximately one to three‐foot spacing. There are shallow spalls or incipient spalls with rust stains
on the underside of the fascias.
There are sidewalks on both sides of the bridge. The east curb face was patched as part of the 2017
work. The west sidewalk was previously widened by 6‐feet.
The bridge railings are concrete open parapets with a one‐tube aluminum rail. The concrete railing has
some rusty cracks with shallow spalls on the posts and some scattered hairline cracks on the horizontal
rail. The west railing has a 6” x 10” spall on the east face on the south end and an 8’‐6” long horizontal
crack near the north end. There is a dent in the tube rail on the west side near the north end. There is a
newer guardrail anchor block on the south end of the west railing, but has no approach guardrail
attached. The openings in the parapet railing do not meet current AASHTO standards for pedestrian
railings, but the pedestrian fencing addresses this on the west railing.
SUPERSTRUCTURES
The beams are unpainted A588 steel. They have uniform corrosion with light flaking rust. They are in
good condition and generally performing as intended.
SUBSTRUCTURES
The abutments are in generally good condition with some hairline vertical cracks. There are rust stains
under the beams on the north abutment indicating that leakage at the backwall has occurred.
APPROACHES
The approach pavement and sidewalks are newer and are in good condition.
The approach guardrail is dented in the southeast and northwest quadrants. The guardrail in southwest
quadrant has been removed. The approach guardrail does not meet current MDOT standards.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Replace approach guardrail.
Retrofit the east concrete parapet railing to meet current AASHTO standards for clear openings.
