BIENNIAL BRIDGE INSPECTION SUMMARY
N MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD OVER THE
GRAND RIVER
STRUCTURE NUMBER – 3944
CITY OF LANSING, MI
October 10, 2017
The bridge consists of a 7-span rolled steel beam
superstructure on 6-column piers built in 1960. The deck was
replaced in 2001. The bridge overall is in good condition.
DECK
The bridge deck is in good condition. The concrete surface has a few fine cracks with a few diagonal cracks in the
corners. There are sidewalks with aesthetic parapet tube railings on each side. The railings have heavy leaching
in the vertical cracks and map cracking center spans, a few spalls with exposed reinforced. The railing in the
southern spans are in better condition. The sidewalks are in poor condition with map cracking throughout.
There is deep spalling with exposed reinforcement the entire length of span 1S along the east curb and for about
10-feet (ft) in the west curbline.
SUPERSTRUCTURE
There are 12 beam lines with five lines of pin and hangers. The beams were painted in 2001 to go with beam end
repairs. The paint is in good condition with only minor rust stains in isolated locations.
SUBSTRUCTURE
The substructure units are in good condition. There are a couple isolated hairline vertical cracks in both
abutments, with a shallow spall in the SW wingwall and a few cracks in the northwest wingwall. The piers have a
few vertical cracks in isolated locations on the column and cap. There was a 3-square foot (sft) spall with
exposed reinforcement in Column 1E of Pier 6S. Some of the crashwalls have a few shallow spalls.
APPROACHES
The approaches are in fair condition. Both approaches are concrete and have a few transverse and longitudinal
cracks. The south approach has two spalls totaling 6-sft near the reference line with failing bituminous patches.
The north approach has 2-sft of spalls in all four corners of the approach. The approach sidewalk has
approximately 1-inch settlement in all four quadrants with minor vegetation between sidewalk joints.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
• Patch spalls along the curb faces and railing.
• Fill potholes near end joints in approach.

Joints
6 6 6 N end joint has a few small edge spalls, partialy sunken HPR. S end joint is about 70%
sunken with two large spalls, one is filled with failing bit patch. (10/17)
North end joint has 4 lft of missing HPR seal. There is a bituminous filled spall at the east
and west end of the north joint (2 sft). South end joint is missing HPR along 50% of joint
length. Minor leakage observed below. (10/15)
North end joint has 2 lft of missing hot poured rubber seal. There is a bituminous filled spall
at the west end of the north joint (2sft) with a crushed area adjacent in the approach. South
end joint is missing HPR along 50% of joint length. Minor leakage observed below. (10/13)
4. Railings 5 5 5 Aesthetic parapet tube railing on both sides. Heavy leaching in vert cracks and map cracking
in center spans on both sides, a few STS in the both sides on the top near center spans.
Southern spans are in better condition. 4-ft long spall on top of railing near light pole on west
side with heavy leaching horiz cracks. (10/17)
Concrete parapet with two-tube rail. Typical map cracking observed in span 4s-7s. Minor
vertical and longitudinal cracks with leaching in the concrete parapet end posts. Open
horizontal crack (1/8 inch wide) in the top of the west railing in span 4s-6s. 4 sft spall at base
of light standard 2s, west rail. Minor impact damage at the west rail, span 3s. (10/15)
Concrete parapet with 2 tube rail. Typical map cracking observed throughout. Minor vertical
and longitudinal cracks with leaching in the concrete parapet end posts. Open horizontal
crack (1/8 inch wide) in the top of the west railing, full length. Deteriorated/scaled area at
base of light standard 2s, west rail. Impact damage at the west rail, span 3s. (10/13)
5. Sidewalks

6 6 4 Map cracking throughout both sidewalks on either side. STS along entire E curbline w/ about
12 sft spall on top near south EJD in N span. About 10-ft sts on W curbline near S EJD.

sft at east). 1 sft spall in east sidewalk curb at joint 5s. Horizontal cracks in curb faces

with new pins. Several bolted beam web and bottom flange repairs throughout spans 1s, 2s,

Pier 3s has a 2 sft spall on the north face. Vertical crack under column 2e on Pier 3s. North
pier has a 1 sft spall on the north face of cap. Vertical cracks on pier 6s. There is a 2 sft spall
with exposed rebar on column 1e at pier 6s. Few minor rust stains on crashwalls. Timber
debris at the upstream end of pier 3s and 4s. Debris at upstream side of pier 4s and 5s and
at downstream side of pier 3s and 4s. Probed for scour, none found. (10/15)
North pier has a 8 sft spall on the north face of cap. Pier 3s has a 2 sft spall on the north face.
Few minor rust stains on crashwalls. There is a 6 sft spall to exposed rebar on crashwall and
vertical crack under column 2e on Pier 3s. Vertical Cracks on pier 6s. There is a 2 sft spall
with exposed rebar on column 1e at pier 6s. Probed for scour, none observed. Timber debris
at the upstream end of pier 3s, and 4s. Tree logged on north side of pier 5s. (10/13)
