HomeMy WebLinkAboutRPT_STR 3940_Narrative_E Grand River over Grand River_2017_1120BIENNIAL BRIDGE INSPECTION SUMMARY EAST GRAND RIVER AVENUE OVER THE GRAND RIVER STRUCTURE NUMBER – 3940 CITY OF LANSING, MI October 12, 2017 The bridge consists of a 3-span, prestressed concrete I-beam superstructure on two pier walls in the water and tall cantilever abutments. Constructed in 1929, it received a superstructure replacement in 2006. The bridge overall is in good condition. DECK The bridge deck is in good condition. The concrete deck has minor scaling and a few longitudinal cracks that run the entire length of the bridge. A few longitudinal cracks in the center turn lane have been sealed. There is light surface map cracking the entire length of the bridge with heavier map cracking near the curb line. There are concrete sidewalks and decorative metal railing on each side. The sidewalks have frequent longitudinal cracks with light map cracking the entire length at both sides near the railing. The extended overhangs on each fascia have water ponding in the corner, and the north overhang has a leaching vertical crack on the fascia side. The bottom of the deck has stay-in-place metal forms with no visible degradation. SUPERSTRUCTURE The prestressed concrete I-beams are in good condition. We observed no deficiencies on the beams or the concrete diaphragms. SUBSTRUCTURE The substructure units are in good condition. The east abutment had a few vertical cracks near a drain outlet in the southeast corner. The pier caps were reconstructed in 2006 and are in good condition. A few vertical cracks have been epoxy injected and sealed. APPROACHES The approach pavement is in good condition, with a few minor spalls along the longitudinal joints. The northwest and southeast approach sidewalks had bituminous wedges to correct approximately 1.5-inch (in)-2-in of settlement. However, approximately 1/2-in of settlement remains.
