HomeMy WebLinkAboutRPT_STR 3939_Narrative_Shiawasee Over Grand River_2017_1120 BIENNIAL BRIDGE INSPECTION SUMMARY SHIAWASSEE STREET OVER THE GRAND RIVER STRUCTURE NUMBER – 3939 CITY OF LANSING, MI October 10, 2017 The bridge consists of a 3-span, prestressed concrete I-beam superstructure built in 1996. The bridge is in overall good condition. DECK The bridge deck is in good condition. There are a few longitudinal cracks in the concrete deck and a few diagonal cracks in the northeast corner. There are two 2-tube railings on each side separating the sidewalk from traffic and decorative concrete spindle railings on each fascia. The sidewalk had some diagonal cracking at the ends and some map cracking near the east expansion joint device. The decorative railing had some vertical cracks with leaching in the spindles. There were a few isolated spalls along the brush block. SUPERSTRUCTURE The prestressed concrete I-beams are in good condition. There are concrete panels on each fascia to give the appearance of an arched concrete bridge. The panels had some horizontal cracking near the anchorage to the fascia beams, and a spall with exposed reinforcement near the west pier in the north panel. SUBSTRUCTURE The substructure units were in good condition. Both abutments had tight vertical cracks with the east abutment having some wider cracks near bearings 3S and 6S. The return walls had a few hairline vertical cracks. The piers also had some fine vertical cracks. The west pier had some scaling below the high-water mark. The west pier footing was exposed full length of the east face and part of the west face. The east pier footing was covered by riprap and slope paving. APPROACHES The approaches were in fair condition. The bituminous approaches have wide longitudinal cracks and failing patches. There were a few spalls along both reference lines, while the east approach had minor settling. The approach sidewalks had transverse, longitudinal and map cracking in all quadrants. There were some spalls in the brush block at the west reference line and the southeast corner. There was some minor vegetation in the reference line joints. RECOMMENDATIONS: • Patch open potholes in approaches. • Add riprap to west pier to address footing exposure. • Repair spalled brush blocks. Expansion Joints 7 7 7 Strip seal expansion joints over piers. Minor rusting on armor, partially debris filled. Two spalls in EB lane at west expansion joint with failing bit patch. Railings 7 6 6 Decorative concrete spindle railings on fascia and two-tube metal railing separating traffic and sidewalk. A few fine vertical cracks with some leaching in the concrete spindles, a few pedestals have map cracking as well as some light standards. (10/17) Decorative concrete spindle railings. Random tight wet horizontal cracks in base of railings. Random wet map cracked areas. There is a 2 tube crash railing located along the curb line, both sides. The brush block has typical vertical cracks. There is a 1 sft spall at the base of the north railing, east end. (10/15) Decorative concrete spindle railings.
