HomeMy WebLinkAboutRPT_STR 3937_Narrative_Kalamazoo over Grand River_2017_1120 BIENNIAL BRIDGE INSPECTION SUMMARY KALAMAZOO STREET OVER THE GRAND RIVER STRUCTURE NUMBER – 3937 CITY OF LANSING, MI October 12, 2017 The bridge is three spans with haunched steel plate girders constructed in 1979. The bridge had an overlay and the beams were painted in 2010. The bridge overall is in fair condition. DECK The bridge deck is in fair condition. The top surface has a concrete overlay, with transverse cracks at 5’-10’ spacing and fine map cracking throughout. A majority of these cracks are in the west half of the bridge. The bottom surface had some efflorescence leaking through the transverse construction joints. A few small incipient spalls in isolated locations were also present with some shallow spalls as well. The fascia had some leaching vertical cracks at 3 feet (ft)-10 ft spacing. There were sidewalks with open parapet single-tube railings on both sides. There are frequent cracks and spalls in the bottom of the posts with some exposed reinforcement and rust stains. Sidewalks have open transverse cracks at 4 ft-12 ft spacing. SUPERSTRUCTURE There are eight haunched continuous steel plate girders that are in fair condition. The beams are A588 weathering steel with painted beam ends. There is some patina present with some flaking near the painted beam ends. There are holes in the end diaphragms of bay 1S at both abutments. SUBSTRUCTURE The substructure units are in good condition. There are a couple isolated hairline vertical cracks in both abutments. A 1-square foot (sft) incipient spall at the center of the west abutment. The piers have a few hairline cracks. The footing at the east pier has about 1-ft exposed along the channel side. APPROACHES The approaches are in fair condition. The east approach is HMA with wide longitudinal cracks along the center line and some widening transverse cracks. The west approach is concrete and in good condition. There are few minor cracks in the approach sidewalks. There is some erosion beneath the sidewalk in the southwest quadrant. RECOMMENDATIONS: • Provide scour countermeasures at east pier footing. • Replace end diaphragms where section loss is present. • Repair erosion in southwest quadrant under sidewalk. Railings 5 5 5 Open parapet railing with one tube, vertical cracks and spalls frequent the bottom of the posts with rust staining and exposed reinforcement. Concrete posts have cracks, spalls with exposed steel reinforcement on the concrete posts, delamination and rust spots are typical. 4 sft spall in north railing fascia, span 1w. There are several concrete repairs made to the curblines of the sidewalks. Open transverse cracks are spaced every 12 +/- feet. Open horizontal cracks in the north sidewalk curb face. Rust stains and few open horizontal cracks and small scattered spalls in both sidewalk curb faces. (10/15) Concrete sidewalks along both sides. There are several concrete repairs made to the curblines of the sidewalks. Open transverse cracks are spaced every 12 +/- feet. Open horizontal cracks in the north sidewalk curb face, 60 lft total. There is a 1 sft spall in the top of the east abutment wall, in bay 5s. There are 7 tight leaching vertical cracks in the west abutment wall. Open vertical cracks typical in the returnwalls. (10/13) 14. Piers (SIA-60) 5 5 6 A few HL vert cracks, footing exposure along west face of east pier in channel, about 1' exposed. (10/17) Open vertical leaching crack near beams 3s and 4s on the east face of pier 2w. Footing exposure along west side of pier 2w. Maximum vertical footing exposure is 4'-7" below beam 5s. Pier rating lowered due to scour. (10/15) Open vertical leaching crack near beams 3s and 4s on the east face of pier 2w. Probed for scour and discovered scour and exposure of the pier footing up to 4 feet exposed at pier 2w along the west face and the upstream pier nose for a length of 55 feet.
