HomeMy WebLinkAboutRPT_STR 3935_Narrative_Elm St Over Grand River_2017_1120 BIENNIAL BRIDGE INSPECTION SUMMARY ELM STREET OVER THE GRAND RIVER STRUCTURE NUMBER – 3935 CITY OF LANSING, MI October 12, 2017 The bridge consists of a 2-span prestressed concrete I-beam superstructure on a tall pier wall in the water and tall cantilever abutments. It was constructed in 2003. The bridge overall is in good condition. DECK The bridge deck is in good condition. The deck has a new epoxy overlay with a few fine reflective cracks on the surface. There is a sidewalk on both sides with aesthetic parapet tube railing. The sidewalk has a few vertical cracks and some spalling in the curb. The railing is in good condition with only a few hairline vertical cracks. SUPERSTRUCTURE The prestressed concrete I-beams are in good condition, with no noted deficiencies on the beams or the concrete diaphragms. SUBSTRUCTURE The substructure units are in good condition. We found some fine map cracking in the north end of the corbel at the west abutment, and some sediment build up at the southeast corner of the east abutment. The pier was in good condition, with minor scaling below the high-water mark and some leaching near the fascia. APPROACHES The approach pavements are in good condition. There are some hairline longitudinal cracks in the east approach, with some map cracking in the west approach. We observed approximately 1-inch (in)-1.5-in of settlement at the northwest, southwest and southeast approach sidewalks at the reference lines with some vegetation growth in the sidewalk joints. RECOMMENDATIONS: • Spray for vegetation along curb line in approaches. • Provide more riprap in southeast quadrant in front of east abutment.
