HomeMy WebLinkAboutRPT_STR 3953_Narrative_Grand Trunk RR over Pennsylvania Ave_2017_1120 BIENNIAL BRIDGE INSPECTION SUMMARY GRAND TRUNK RR OVER PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE STRUCTURE NUMBER – 3953 CITY OF LANSING, MI October 9, 2017 The bridge is a 2-span concrete encased steel beam superstructure on single center pier and tall cantilever abutments, constructed in 1928. The bridge is in overall fair condition. The bridge currently carries two tracks for the Canadian National Railway. DECK The top of the bridge deck is not visible because of the railroad ballast above. The concrete deck was poured to the bottom of the steel beams, partially encasing them. The concrete has numerous spalls along the bottom, most of them exposing steel diaphragms. There are numerous stalactites forming between the steel beams and the concrete. The fascias have deep spalls on either side with exposed broken reinforcement and heavy leaching. There is 2-tube railing on top with concrete posts on a brush block. The horizontal tubes are corroded and the brush block has a few spalls on both sides. We recommend replacing the tube railing near the east abutment. The concrete end posts are heavily scaled with some heavy map cracking and leaching. There appears to be some leaking occurring above the pier and at the abutments. SUPERSTRUCTURE The steel beams are encased in concrete to the bottom flange and are in fair condition. The paint has flaked off most of the beams resulting in bottom flange surface rust. Several steel diaphragms are exposed where the concrete has spalled and are also rusted. There are numerous high load scrapes along all beams in both spans. Load carrying capacity does not appear to be affected. SUBSTRUCTURE The concrete abutments are in fair condition. They are surface coated and disguise any hairline cracks in the concrete. There are a few shallow spalls along the top edge of the abutments but do not undermine the bearings. There are corbels at the ends of both abutments, and all four of them are spalled with exposed reinforcement. Sidewalks in front of abutments have settlement bumps in the southwest and southeast quadrants. The pier is in fair condition. The pier has been surface coated, but the cap is stained from leaking above. There is horizontal cracking near the middle of both faces with some leaching and rust stains. There is some leaching cracks in the bottom of the cap in bay 1S. There is a curb on either side in front of the crashwall that is heavily scaled the entire length of the pier. RECOMMENDATIONS: • Replace railing on top of bridge. • Scale loose concrete from deck underside and patch spalled fascias. • Patch substructure. • Repair tripping hazard in sidewalk in southwest and southeast quadrants (southeast is cold patched but hazard remains). • Replace tube railing near east abutment. End posts are heavily scaled with heavy MC and leaching in NE post. Fascias of brush block is leaching throught horizontal cracks on north side. End concrete blocks have heavy scaling of the concrete and leaching cracks (very heavy at southwest end post). Spall to steel in north railing, post 3w. Spalls along north brush block. Concrete posts have spalls to exposed steel at north railing, posts 2w and 3s. Open vertical cracks in brush blocks. Severe scaling (14 feet) at the south railing fascia near pier 1w. Deck Bottom Surface (SIA-58B) 4 4 4 Concrete is poured to the bottom of steel beams. Spalls are frequently occurring at steel diaphragms. Deep spalls at NW and SE fascia with exposed broken reinforcement. Stalactites present in a few areas between steel beams and concrete. North fascia has horizontal cracks with leaching. (10/17) Concrete is visible between the steel beams. Span 1w: Spalls (most with exposed steel) in bay 1s-6s, 9s-13s (heavy in bay 13s). Span 2w: Spalls (most with exposed steel) in bay 1s, 3s, 5s, 6s, 9-13s (heavy in bay 13s). Stalactites in span 2w. Fascias: Span 1w, south fascia has 10 sft spalls at pier. Span 1w, north fascia is 90% spalled. Span 2w, south fascia is 80% spalled. Span 2w, north fascia has 12 sft spalls at pier. (10/15) Concrete is visible between the steel beams. Several spalls to exposed steel and incipient spalls typical in spans 1w and 2w. Tight leaching cracks and stalactites visible in span 2w. Incipient spalls located in Span 1w: bays 3,4,6,9,10, 11, 12, and 13s. Spalls to steel in bay 13s, near fascia; Span 2w: bays 1,3,5,9-13s over sb outside lane. Spalls to steel in bay 1s. (10/13) 7. The concrete fascias have sustained multiple high load hits over traffic lanes. There is an exposed reinforcement bar bent upwards in span 1w, over the outside southbound lane. Horizontal leaching cracks in fascias typical. (10/15) There are 14 beams encased in concrete with only the bottom flanges visible. 98% of the paint system is missing on steel. Several scrape marks from high load hits observed, but no notches, or out of plan bending. Extensive pack rust observed at beam end at the north fascia beam at pier 1w. (10/15) Pier 1w has extensive leaching cracks, medium spalls in pier cap with vertical cracks under beams 8s, 9s, 11s, and 12s. Filler walls have horizontal open leaching cracks.
