The Harley Franks School Walkover over Wise Road is a single span
aluminum truss constructed in 1975. The walkover is in generally good
condition.
SUPERSTRUCTURE
At the lower east stair, the 11th stair tread from the bottom is bent on the backside at the west end.
At the upper west stair, the first stair tread from the intermediate landing is bent. There is minor
damage to the bottom base angle on the west stringer. There are vines in the fencing at the west stair
that appear to have been cut but not removed. The small sections of fencing between the top of the
stairs and the main span are loose and twisted.
On the main truss, the horizontal decorative panel is loose at the east end of the north face. The first
three sets of connections (out of five) at the east end of the panel are broken. Numerous wire ties at the
bottom of the pedestrian fencing are missing (49 total counted).
There are utility wires under the main span at the east end. One wire is touching the truss, but appears
to have additional insulation around the wire at that location.
FOUNDATIONS
The west stair concrete foundation pedestal has heavy leaching map cracks. The west main span
concrete foundation pedestal has moderate leaching map cracks. There are cracks in the grout under the
column base plates.
The east main span concrete foundation pedestal has heavy leaching map cracks. It also has minor
deterioration on top at the northwest corner and scaling at the top of the southeast and southwest
corners. At the east stair foundation pedestal, there are heavy leaching map cracks with scaling at the
top southeast and southwest corners. The grout under the column base plates is disintegrating.
The guardrail in front of the west stairs and foundations is dented at each end due to traffic impacts. It is
also low, measuring 1’‐3 1/2" from grade to top of rail.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Reattach or removed loose decorative panel on north face of main truss.
Chip and patch concrete foundation pedestals as required.
Chip and place new non‐shrink grout where required under the column base plates.
Replace missing wire ties for the fencing.
Install new sections of fencing between the stairs and main span.
Upgrade guardrail at west stairs and foundations.
