HomeMy WebLinkAboutRPT_STR 3949_Narrative_Kendon Walkover over Pennsylvania Ave_2017_1120 BIENNIAL BRIDGE INSPECTION SUMMARY KENDON WALKOVER OVER PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE STRUCTURE NUMBER – 3949 CITY OF LANSING, MI October 9, 2017 The bridge consists of a single main span steel thru truss with perpendicular tailspans, each consisting of 2-span stairs with center landing. It was constructed in 1960. The bridge overall is in fair condition. DECK The bridge deck is in good condition. The deck is comprised of painted steel grate panels. The paint has begun to wear off on some of the panels but little rust has formed. There are frequent rust spots on the fronts of the west stairs. There is heavier rust on the angles at each end of the deck. There is pedestrian fencing on the top and sides of the walkover with a few areas of rust on both the sides and top. SUPERSTRUCTURE The steel thru truss is in fair condition. The thru truss is painted and has a few locations with holes in the top chord. There are five holes in the southwest quadrant in the upper chord ranging from 1/2-inch (in) to 1-in in diameter. There are also four holes in the northwest quadrant in the upper chord, also ranging from 1/2-in to 1in in diameter. The east steel member in the east stairs has a 2- x 1-in hole in the bottom near the concrete pad. The bottom chord has light rust on portions over the roadway. SUBSTRUCTURE The substructure consists of four groups of piers and are in good condition. The main piers consist of four steel tube columns with cross-bracing, sitting on short concrete base walls. The concrete bases are in good condition except for the northeast corner of the northwest pier, where a vertical crack was present the entire height. The base plates for the columns had minor rust on the bolted connections to the concrete bases. The stairs are supported at the midpoint by two steel columns each, with small concrete pad foundations. The west pad has heavier scaling and the concrete surface coating is starting to flake off. APPROACHES The sidewalks that approach the stairways are in fair condition. There is minor settlement in some of the slabs and vegetation has grown in between some of the joints. East member of east stairs has a hole towards the bottom near the landing roughly 1" dia. Top chord, north side has four holes (0.5"-1" diameter) located over the right lane of southbound roadway. Bottom chord, north side has one hole (<1" diameter) located over the center turn lane. Welded intersections of members checked. There are two bolted connections at the top and bottom chords. Hole in east stairway fascia beam at base (1" diameter). (10/15) Top chord, south side has 5 observed holes up to 1 inch in diameter located over the left lane of southbound roadway. Top chord, north side has 4 pin sized holes located over the right lane of southbound roadway. The southern bottom chord has 1 suspect small hole (<1 inch) located over the center turn lane. Paint (SIA-59A) 6 5 5 Entire structure is coated with a light blue paint. Paint is rusted in isolated spots with some section loss in top chord and east member of east stairs.
