The Willow Street Walkover over North Martin Luther King Jr. is a
single‐span painted steel truss constructed in 1966. The walkover is in
generally poor condition.
SUPERSTRUCTURE
At the west stair, there are no base plates or anchor bolts at the bottom of the stringers. The fence posts
appear to be cast into the concrete. There is some peeling paint on the stringers. There are rust holes on
the back side of the bottom stair tread. The support column base plates are slightly warped.
At the east stair, the intermediate platform is framed with steel channel members and supported on
four columns. On the west side of the platform, there is pack rust between the channel and the tube
member supporting the deck planking. The beam is bulged out from the pack rust and the beam web is
corroded with a number of holes. It appears that this member may have had previous damage and has a
welded repair at the same time the fencing was replaced. The columns have scattered flaking rust.
There is a small hole at the bottom south side of the southwest column. The southeast support column
base plate is warped and bent.
Also at the east stair, there are newer fence posts and fencing on the east side of the stairs and
intermediate platform. The connection of lower stair stringer and the intermediate platform appears to
have been previously damaged and has a welded repair. On the west side of the lower stair run, the top
rail of the pedestrian fencing was replaced with a square tube. The tube has some rust spots and is bent.
On the north side of the intermediate platform, the top horizontal tube of the pedestrian fencing is
missing. Some of the fencing fabric is loose at the bottom.
Each main span support consists of two vertical columns and two diagonal braces. At the east main span
supports, the south vertical column base plate is warped. At the west main span support, there is a rust
hole on the bottom south side of the south diagonal brace. There are welded steel repair plates on the
west and north faces of both diagonal braces. There is pack rust under the northwest and southwest
base plates and the plates are bent.
The main span truss has scattered peeling paint and spotted rust throughout. The first bottom diagonal
brace from the east is rusted through at both the middle and at the northeast end. The first bottom
diagonal brace from the west has uniform rust along its entire length, is rusted through at the southwest
end, and is partially cut away with a welded repair plate at the northeast end. The second top diagonal
brace from the west has a rust hole in the bottom at its northwest end. Some pedestrian fencing is
loose.
